PERCUSSION | LEVEL 2 – INTERMEDIATE

Frame Drums: Rhythmic Accompaniment, Ornamentation, and Improvisation

Learn to accompany songs and improvise applying different hand, finger, and wrist techniques. Relative medieval Arabic rhythms will be studied and their possible application in medieval European repertoires will be discussed.

Learn to play round and square frame drums in medieval style by studying strokes and techniques recorded in medieval sources. You will also discover how to apply medieval rhythmic modes and their ornamentation to the accompany of vocal and instrumental pieces.

Octavio Beltrán

Instructor

Octavio Beltrán studied composition at the Conservatorio de las Rosas in Morelia (Mexico) and ethnomusicology at the National School of Music in Mexico City DF. He has conducted rigorous organological research on pre-Hispanic musical instruments and is also specialized in European historical percussion instruments. He is a member of the medieval music ensemble Mirall de trobar, and of the Baroque and novo-Hispanic music group Tente in the Air.
